THE GOLDEN CAGE (A Dance of Dragons #0.5)

In the land of Ourthuro, cruelty is a way of life. The king rules with an iron fist and no one dare defy him--no one except his daughter. Princess Leena is keeping a dangerous secret, she has fallen in love with a soldier and it would mean both of their lives if her father ever discovered their affair.

But Leena will risk it all to be with the man she loves--her heart, her life, her freedom. And when her brother's birthday celebration takes a dangerous turn, Leena is forced to make a decision that will change the fate of her nation and eventually the world.

THE SHADOW SOUL (A Dance of Dragons #1)

When Jinji's home is destroyed, she is left with nowhere to run and no one to run to--until she meets Rhen, a prince chasing rumors that foreign enemies have landed on his shores. Masquerading as a boy, Jinji joins Rhen with vengeance in her heart. But traveling together doesn't mean trusting one another, and both are keeping a deep secret--magic. Jinji can weave the elements to create master illusions and Rhen can pull burning flames into his flesh.

But while they struggle to hide the truth, a shadow lurks in the night. An ancient evil has reawakened, and unbeknownst to them, these two unlikely companions hold the key to its defeat. Because their meeting was not coincidence--it was fate. And their story has played out before, in a long forgotten time, an age of myth that is about to be reborn...

After reading the "prequel" and the first book in the series I would expect for there to be at least SOME conclusion to...ANYthing. The characters in the prequel are not even mentioned until about halfway through the first book, and then their appearance is fairly insignificant. I don't know if they come up in later volumes, but I really have no intention of finding out. Personally I will stick with series that, while sticking with a central theme, tell individual stories that actually have a resolution in each volume. I find this kind of read very unsatisfactory and I don't have much respect for authors whose goal seems to be not to tell a good story, but rather to get you to buy the next book.

A Dance of Dragons Series Starter Bundle eBook Kaitlyn Davis Reviews

I loved both the book and the short story and I’m sorry that the whole collection wasn’t free, otherwise I would have continued it. I bought this book thinking that it was about dragons, but for the most part, a dragon was only mentioned once and it wasn’t in the fire-breathing-angry-dragon way I was expecting. Nonetheless, Davis wrote this book in a graceful way, using magic and deep secrets that the two main characters possessed in a way that I was hooked. I loved how Davis gave the reader a short story that gave a tiny background for some of the characters. Once I connected them to the second book, I gasped on the inside.

I also adored Rhen and Jinji’s relationship. Jinji had a certain spice to her and Rhen had a careful love to him. I liked the secrets that Jinji held specifically from Rhen and how he never knew the truth until the very end (which I will get back to later). There were plot twists and I couldn’t guess any part of the book, it was completely original, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I recommend it.

I still gave it a 4/5 instead of a perfect score because of how the ending was delivered. I realize that in order to lead the way to the second book, you need a cliffhanger, but it felt rushed and “empty”. As if Davis ran out of the usual descriptive and engaging writing style she usually had and went with a rather stale ending.
More accurate rating 3.5

I enjoyed the story.

The writing needed a bit of polishing, however. There was some overdramatic prose and too-modern language for the setting. Odd usage or inaccurate word choice periodically distracted me. For example, there was a tendency to use intransitive verbs transitively ("She darted her eyes ahead," "…to prevent [the flames] from smoldering his family.") These verbs should have no object. Her eyes darted. The table smoldered (period). And Rhen sure "smirked" a lot. A smirk is not a pleasant smile, often used when the smirker is rejoicing in another's misfortune. It made him seem like a bit of a jerk, when I know he's not. Typos and other errors also detracted, though it wasn't a crippling problem.

Despite these issues, it was a pleasant read. I liked the characters. And there was a believable reason a girl was able to pass for a boy (a trope I normally dislike).

I also enjoyed in the bundle how the short story and the novel worked together.

I would try more by Kaitlyn Davis.
Good storytelling but do not like the format. Leaves you hanging needing to buy the next book for resolution to story. Not in the usual sense but in a totally unresolved way. Didn’t appreciate this. Dropping the author because of this.
This is a series of books. The prequel and first book do end in cliffhangers, but I did not feel cheated. The world the author creates is rich, interesting, and different from other books of this genre. The characters are likable and relatable. I enjoyed this first book, which I received for free, and would like to read additional books in the series after I finish the other 80 books on my that I have yet to read ).

If you're hoping for a one off story that is part of a series, this is not going to be the book for you. If you're looking for an adventure series with heart, magical elements, and likable main characters; give this series a try.
I easily give the author's talent 5 stars, i HATE how she chooses to end the books.
Both the novella (A Golden Cage) and the 1st book in her series (The Shadow Soul) end in cliff hangers- which i hate.
I see it being more of a Sell tactic than Kaitlyn Davis allowing her talent take hold and allow you to finish the book with a satisfied feeling.
When I finished The Shadow Soul I was just left hanging with a "you have got to be kidding me" aggravated empty attitude. I had already bought the rest of the series she had out because I loved how she told the story and how vivid everything was. She is a great and talent writer. Now, after finishing everything (the novella and the 1st book in the series) I've read by her, I'm just disappointed. Her talent sold the series to me before the cliff hanger ending did and if i knew before that was going to be her selling tactic or her writing style I never would have purchased them.
I found it difficult to get into this book, and I'm an avid reader...However, once I did get into it, I like the characters and the way the story was written...until...the cliffhanger...it's killing me!!!

That being said, I really did enjoy the writing style of the author, and the direction she was heading. It felt to me that things weren't fully developed and thought out enough to be published...the books didn't really tie together very well to me.

I received this book for free in exchange for my honest opinion.
After reading the "prequel" and the first book in the series I would expect for there to be at least SOME conclusion to...ANYthing.
