Light-hearted, sweet, and romantic. This is a collection of short stories that takes you on a journey through life, love, and passion, and reminds us that sometimes things really do happen for a reason.
The prose is exquisitely descriptive. The characters are charming, appealing, and endearing. The plots are unique, although they share the standard contemporary romance, happy-ever-after ending. And the settings are magical, taking you to the luxurious beaches and vineyards of Italy, to the museums and landmarks of the City of Light, to the picturesque countryside of the Scottish Highlands.
This truly is a warm, easy read that is a nice way to spend an afternoon

Riding a Strong Wind edition by Robertson Tait Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The short story carries within it its own discipline, as distinct from that of the novel, and with far less canvas to work on, far less forgiving room, demands more precision, more craft in its structure and prose.
Here, they are in capable hands, solidly yet lightly built, well written, with a glamour and a travelled world weariness that is open still to love, to hope, and peopled with characters who come off the page and dialogue you can hear as well as read.
They cross the world, these stories, offering the reader destinations as diverse as a rain swept island in Outer Hebrides and the exotic heat of the Caribbean, and at the price asked for it well worth the fare.
I can’t remember the last time I read a book of short stories. What a refreshing change! Robertson Tait’s stories, ‘Riding a Strong Wind’, are fun, frivolous and hopelessly romantic. And yet Tait is a skilled writer who manages to balance his story lines with beautiful observation. His settings are often romantic and exotic (Tobago, Italy, Santa Barbara …) and it’s clear that Tait has extensive personal knowledge of these fabulous locations. Such is his ability to bring these places to life that I found myself longing for a holiday and an escape from the bleak January blizzards outside!
However, I have to say that despite the many sultry sun drenched scenes, it was Tait’s Scottish story ‘Barra’ that stood out for me. It follows the romance between a local island man and an actress ‘in exile’ from her celebrity lifestyle. I thought their romance was the most convincing and touching of all the stories and found myself really rooting for their relationship to survive.
My overriding criticism of Tait’s stories would probably be that things often end too perfectly. Not only does the boy always get the girl but they inevitably seem to end up successful and often rich as well! If only life was always like that. But, as I’ve already said, these stories are refreshing and perhaps it’s that sort of optimism that we all need.
Some of the greatest writers of the past were famed for their short stories and I think it’s inspiring to see a continuing tradition. If you are deeply cynical then ‘Riding a Strong Wind’ probably isn’t for you. But, if you want to throw caution to the wind and find yourself transported to gorgeous sunny climes where life really is beautiful, then this should be right up your street. Robertson Tait, please keep writing!
A unique and well written collection of shorter stories with a hint of romance and a happily ever after to each. The happy endings to each story were heart warming and the writing strong but the best thing about the stories was the settings.
"In the evening they sat in his car, high on a hill, and looked out over the city, the lights glittering
below turning Rome into a carpet of warm, soft terracotta, an Aladdin's cave of delights."
This is from Florence-La Certosa, which happens to be my personal favorite out of the bunch. Robertson Tait brings these exotic locales to life. I don't usually read a lot of short stories but I'm glad I took the time to read these. La Certosa alone is worth a second read.
In this diverse collection of contemporary short stories and that of a novelette, a romantic whirlwind takes hold to whisk a reader through airport lounges, sporting activities, and a scary adventure as the varied and delightful stories unfold. From Amsterdam to Rome to Scotland and notable beach resorts the journey brings to life the places; the scenery and atmosphere; the-eyes-across-the-room scenarios; and of course love, the ever enduring ingredient for any great romance novel. All the stories equal merit in their own right, and my particular favourites happened to be that of Barra (Scotland) and the Amalfi incident (not unlike a return visit for moi to the delights and perils of this region), but which of these delightful stories will stand out for you and make you laugh, near cry or just sigh? This is a perfect book for beach, late night, or coffee break reading.
You don't have to eat dark chocolate and drink red wine while reading this collection of fine love stories but it certainly couldn't hurt. I felt like I was on vacation while reading these stories and in most cases could picture vividly the scene whether it was driving up the mountainous Amalfi coast, walking in the rain in Rome or the scariest thing ever, landing on the beach in the Scottish island of Barra, which is actually the local airport (and one of the ten most dangerous airports in the world by some accounts, I was so shocked, I looked it up). This is one of the most pleasantly descriptive books I've had the pleasure of reading and it's great to read a book where the boy does get the girl and they get to live happily ever after and in some of the most exotic locations on earth (what's not to like). I still can't believe that a proud Highland Scot wrote these stories but then, Braveheart aside, they do have soft poetic hearts these Celts, don't they?
Light-hearted, sweet, and romantic.
